The Washington Commanders own the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Washington is in search of its next franchise quarterback. Caleb Williams from the USC Trojans is expected to be the top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears.
After that, who knows what the Commanders or anyone else will do at the quarterback position. The last time Washington had the second overall pick was back in 2012 when they selected Robert Griffin III from Baylor. Griffin III was Offensive Rookie of the Year that season and the Washington Commanders also won the NFC East that season.
Robert Griffin III had an injury-riddled career after his rookie season. It will be interesting to see what route the Washington Commanders will go in the 2024 NFL Draft. Washington has a new head coach Dan Quinn and the new general manager is Adam Peters. They will also have two second-round picks and other draft picks to help solidify this team.
In the Latest NFL Mock Draft the Washington Commanders Select Quarterback Drake Maye From North Carolina In the 2024 NFL Draft
In the latest NFL Mock Draft, pro football focus Trevor Sikkema has the Washington Commanders selecting quarterback Drake Maye from the North Carolina Tar Heels with the second pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Sikkema wrote:
“Ultimately, Maye is the better quarterback prospect, so until I’m confidently convinced otherwise, he is the No. 2 pick.”
Maye a season ago with North Carolina completed 63.3% of his passes for 3,608 yards, 24 touchdowns, and nine interceptions. Drake Maye is 6’4″ and weighs 230 lbs. The former Tar Heels prospect has a prototypical NFL quarterback frame. Washington Commanders senior writer Zach Selby also chimed in on the possibility of drafting Maye second overall in the 2024 NFL Draft.
He said about it:
“One could argue that the draft really starts with the Commanders now that Justin Fields has been traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers. The move all but ensures that the Chicago Bears will take Caleb Williams with the No. 1 overall pick, barring they receive a massive trade offer from a team looking to move up. So, the real debates beging with Washington, particularly when it comes to them taking either LSU’s Jayden Daniels or UNC’s Drake Maye. On the one hand, Daniels was one of the most electrifying quarterbacks in college football last year, taking a massive step up in his footwork, decision making and ability to elevate his offense. Conversely, Maye’s numbers were down from a year ago but has been more consistent throughout his career with the Tar Heels.”
There are a lot of people who think that the Commanders are going to draft Jayden Daniels from the LSU Tigers instead of Maye and also J.J. McCarthy from the Michigan Wolverines. McCarthy is getting a lot of buzz about being selected in the top five of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Depending on who you ask, Drake Maye could very well be the second-best quarterback in this year’s draft class. Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters will have to decide which quarterback suits this football team the best moving forward.
