Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Newcastle offered Erik ten Hag some much-needed respite, enabling him to deliver an uplifting speech to the delighted Old Trafford crowd before the FA Cup final.
Young forwards like Amad Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho were instrumental in maintaining United’s aspirations for European competition. However, ongoing defensive problems underscored the urgent need for INEOS to acquire at least one top-tier center-back, regardless of the season’s final outcomes.
The club’s management appears to recognize this need and is already working to bolster a defense that has conceded 84 goals in all competitions this season, the highest in over 45 years.
Manchester United Contacts Antonio Silva’s Representatives
According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United has reached out to the representatives of Benfica’s rising star Antonio Silva. The 20-year-old central defender, noted for his excellent passing and composure, is attracting interest from several top clubs.
Silva is set to be the next significant export from Liga Portugal, with reports suggesting he may have already played his last home game for Benfica. United have initiated contact with Silva’s representatives to discuss a potential summer transfer to Old Trafford.
Benfica is unlikely to block Silva’s move if he agrees to join United, who are looking for an ideal replacement for Raphael Varane. However, given United’s current situation, Benfica may demand their asking price, estimated at around €100m (£86m).
Given the financial constraints imposed by the Premier League’s PSR rules, signing Silva might be challenging for United. As an alternative, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team might consider targeting Fulham’s Tosin Adarabioyo, who will be available on a free transfer this summer.
